Q. I have a 6 year old daughter who seems to sit very close to the television and hold books very close when she is reading. Is this normal?

It is recommended that people sit about 6/10 feet from the television. If your daughter needs to sit closer to get a clear image of the television it is perhaps because she is longsighted. I would recommend that she attends for an eye examination to have this further investigated. Childrens visual systems do not fully develop until they are about 8 yrs old, it is therefore important to discover any problems and try to treat them before this age.

Q.My father had a cataract removed 1 week ago. However he is struggling with his vision as his old glasses make his vision blurred in the eye where the cataract was removed. He is due to have the cataract removed in the other eye in 6 months time. Should we wait until then to change the glasses?

Generally it is recommended that you have an eye examination about 6 weeks after having a cataract removed. A small amount of prescription may remain after surgery and new spectacles may be necessary. Although your father is due tho have the other eye operated on in 6 months time, I would recommend that he attend for an eye examination in 5 weeks time to correct the spectacles for the recently operated eye and thus provide him with more comfortable vision for the next 6 months.

Q.At a previous eye exam I was told I would be unsuitable for contact lenses because I have astigmatism. Is this still the case?

In the past astigmatism could not be corrected using contact lenses. At present however there are many new lenses available, some of which can correct certain amounts of astigmatism. As I do not know your prescription I cannot guarantee that we could get lenses to correct your astigmatism, however please feel free to call in and avail of our FREE contact lens assessment.
